Chapter 17: The Last Night at the Studio

Emmett drove me to Fulton with the heater on and neither of us said a word.

He parked in the alley, rolled the studio door up and down behind us, and turned on a single lamp.

The forty prints of me were back on the wall.

I had not noticed him pinning them up again. He must have done it Saturday, after the ladder.

"Hugh said not to be alone with you," I said.

"He did."

"I'm choosing to disobey him."

"Good," Emmett said, and took the camera strap off his shoulder.

I stood in the middle of the floor, under the lamp, in my champagne dress and Hugh's mother's bracelet.

The bracelet was the first thing I wanted gone.

"Take it off me," I said.

He crossed the floor and took my wrist in both hands.

He studied the lock for a moment.

Then he drew a lens screwdriver from his pocket and worked at it with his head bent.

I watched the notch in his eyebrow while he did it.

The lock gave.

He laid the bracelet on the oak table, face down.

"There," he said.

"There," I agreed. "Now the dress."

He didn't ask me twice.

His hands found the zipper and drew it down slowly, and the cool air of the studio came in along my spine.
