Chapter 21: The Altar
Elise's POV
Hugh signed his name in one stroke.
Hugh Thomas Alden, in blue-black ink, large and slanted, in the line marked Groom.
He signed it the way he signed everything, with a flourish.
I watched the pen the whole way to the end of the last letter.
Then he put the pen down and smiled at the hall, and the hall smiled back.
A hundred and forty people had just watched a man sign a marriage license.
"Thank you," the officiant said. "And now the bride."
He lifted the silver pen from the table and turned it toward me, handle first.
I looked at it.
It was a heavy pen, with a gold nib, still wet.
I folded my hands in front of me, right over left, and the platinum band I had bought myself pressed against my knuckle.
Hugh's eyes came to my face.
"Love," he said under his breath. "Take it."
I did not take it.
The officiant waited with the pen held out. Somebody in the third row coughed.
"Love."
Behind us a chair scraped.
