Chapter 18: What Bree Found

By Sunday night Bree had the trust papers spread across her kitchen table, sorted into four colors of sticky tab.

Monty had brought them in a banker's box and set it down in front of her.

"You're the only person I know who can read these fast," he said.

"I'm a paralegal," Bree said. "I'm a paralegal who has been up since three a.m. because my best friend called from a lake. Sit."

He sat.

Kip's mother was at the stove, making eggs for all of us.

She kept looking at Kip and then at me and then at the eggs.

Kip stood against the counter with his arms crossed.

He had not stopped looking at me since we walked in.

I had not minded.

"First thing," Bree said, and tapped a green tab. "The trust. Your grandmother's. You become sole trustee on your thirty-first birthday, which was Friday. The Baumann house belongs to the trust. It always did. Constance has been holding the deed as acting trustee."

"So she can't sell it," I said.

"She can't sell it, call the note, or evict anyone, unless the trustee agrees. And the trustee is Monty, as of Friday."

"The bank's man came to the door on Saturday," Kip said.

"Because Constance told him you were the trustee-in-waiting and didn't know it." Bree looked at Monty. "She's been lying to the bank, too. Congratulations. You can stop all of it with one signature."

"Then I'll sign it," Monty said.

"Tomorrow, with a notary. Don't sign anything tonight, don't sign anything she hands you, and don't read anything aloud without me." She pulled a blue folder toward her. "That's the easy part. This is the part I didn't like."
