Chapter 24: Lamp On

By noon the next day the cabin at Lake Wren had more people in it than it had held in twenty years.

Kip's mother was frying fish at the stove in an apron she'd found on a hook.

Bree sat on the porch rail with her bare feet up, telling anyone who would listen that she had filmed a felony at a gala and it had gone viral for good reasons.

And Monty stood on the dock with his hands in his coat pockets, looking at the water.

Kip walked out to him.

I watched from the porch with a cup of coffee, and I didn't go near them.

I couldn't hear what they said, but I saw it.

Monty said something short.

Kip stood a while with his arms crossed.

Then he put out his left hand.

Monty looked at the ridge across the palm, and then he took it, and they shook once, hard.

When Kip came back up the path I said, "What did he say?"

"That he'd like to come to the wedding. In the back."

"What did you say?"

"I said the back row has a bad view." He sat down beside me on the step. "Third row. And he reads the vows."

"Slowly."

"Slowly."

Bree laughed so hard she nearly fell off the rail.

By dusk the others had gone.

Kip's mother kissed us both on the cheek and left with Bree, and Monty drove away in his rented car with the window down.
