Meng Yuhe came down the farmhouse steps barefoot, in yesterday's trousers, and took the order out of Wenjie's hand.
It was a single sheet with a county stamp, signed by a deputy director.
EMERGENCY DRAINAGE. PUBLIC SAFETY. IMMEDIATE.
There was one blank box at the bottom, for the village committee's countersignature.
"It's not valid," he said.
"It will be," said Wenjie. "Uncle Qian is on his way with the stamp."
"At six in the morning. Three hours before the county team," said Meng Yuhe.
"Public safety doesn't keep office hours, Brother Yuhe."
"You want the pond empty before anyone looks at it."
Wenjie's smile held.
"I want it safe," he said. "I'm very sorry. It's nothing personal."
Meng Yuhe looked at him for a long moment.
He had known Wenjie since the boy was five.
He had carried him on his shoulders at the swimming gala, and been called Brother Yuhe for twenty years.
It occurred to him, standing there in the grey cold, that Wenjie truly did not know.
He was frightened of something, and he did not know what.
