Chapter 13: Good Morning

I had my thumb on the record button before I opened the door wide.

I stepped out onto the landing and pulled the door nearly shut behind me.

Shane and Jo were in the kitchen, one wall away, and I wanted Megan looking at me.

"Hi, babe," Megan said.

"You can't talk to me. There's a hold."

"I'm not talking to you. I'm standing on a public landing, and you happen to be on it."

"Shane's phone has been sitting at this address since midnight," she said. "I assumed he was sulking on your new girlfriend's couch."

"She's not my girlfriend."

"Please. Your hair's a mess and you're shirtless."

"Look at you, going straight to business." She tilted her head. "Fine. Here is the offer, and it's a generous one."

She counted on her fingers.

"One, I drop my complaint. You go back to class like it never happened."

"Two?"

"Two, you stop turning up where I am. No more orientation, no more hallways, no more hoodies at the back of the room."

"Three?"

"Three, you don't say a word about Shane and me. Not to the dean, not to your dad, not to this nurse."
