Jack's POV

I told her yes because there was no other true thing to say.

The car door outside was the gardener's truck.

I heard it was the gardener's truck and didn't care.

Iris stood in Carter Brantley's study holding the photograph of the two of us, and she wasn't crying and she wasn't angry.

She was looking at me hard, checking every word I had said.

"How long?" she asked.

"Since the first week you sat in the chair."

"Two years."

"Almost."

"You never said."

"You were a CEO who taught art on weekday mornings and had to be careful who she trusted," I said. "I was your chief operating officer. I didn't have the right."

She put the photograph back in the folder and closed it.

"Not here," she said. "Take me out of this house."

I took her down the back stairs and through the kitchen, where the cook looked up from the stove and nodded at us.

Iris carried the folder under her arm the whole way.

We got into my car in the drive.

I didn't start it.

She sat in the passenger seat with her hands flat on her knees, looking through the windshield at the Brantley front door.

"You ran a check on him two months ago," she said.

"Yes."

"And I told the board you were jealous."

"You did."

She turned in her seat.

"Were you?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you say so?"

"Because you were right to doubt me, and I was right to run it."

"Jack."

"I could have been wrong about him and hurt you for nothing," I said. "I was in the room when you said it, and I kept my face still. I went home and I didn't sleep. I want you to know that I didn't hold it against you. I held it against myself."

She looked at me for a long moment.
