Chapter 17: Called Due

Iris's POV

The Brantley Holdings board met at nine on the eleventh floor, and I walked in at nine-oh-two with a banker's box.

Jack had called me from the Newport lawn at four.

By five the drive was in my lawyer's hands, and by six Mr. Brantley was in a cardiac unit with a nurse who said he would live.

I had not slept.

I had put on my gray blazer anyway, the one with the torn cuff.

Eleven people sat around the long table.

Margaret sat at the head with her pearls on and her hands folded.

Carter sat on her right, in the chair his father had held for twenty years.

He had a bruise on his wrist where the cuff had been.

Nobody had told the board he was out on bail with a felony charge.

They knew now.

Every head turned to me.

"This meeting is private," Margaret said pleasantly.

"It is a creditors' meeting," I said. "I'm the creditor."

"On what authority?"

I set the box on the table and took the lid off.

"Hargrove Credit sold its Brantley notes at six this morning," I said. "The buyer was Dunhill Group. I hold the senior loan, the second loan, the bridge, and the credit line on this building."

Nobody moved.

A woman near the end of the table, silver-haired, lowered her pen.

"That's two hundred and eleven million dollars," she said.

"And change."

"On what terms are they due?"

"On demand."

I took a page from the box and slid it down the table to her.

"Section nine of every note says the lender may call the full amount on a material misrepresentation by the borrower," I said. "Your president filed a forged marriage license with the county on Friday to claim a guarantee from me. That is a misrepresentation. My lawyer has the filing stamp."
