Chapter 11: The Silver Run
The river came down out of the mountains a mile above the lake.
In October it ran so clear that I could count the stones.
Hank had found me a pair of waders that were too big and rolled the legs up himself.
"Last of the silvers," he said. "They're thin and mean and they fight. You'll like them."
We stood in the tail of a pool with snow on the banks and steam coming off the water.
He stood behind me, to my left, with his huge hands over mine on the rod.
"Hold it loose," he said, against my ear. "Let the line tell you."
I held it loose.
His chest was warm against my back through two jackets, and his beard brushed my hair, and I forgot the river.
"You're not watching the water," Hank said.
"No."
"Watch the water, Kristin."
"I'm watching the water," I said.
"You're not."
He was almost smiling.
His thumb moved against my knuckle, slowly, back and forth, and I leaned my head back against his shoulder.
The line drifted on the current.
It was Monday, and none of the others were in sight.
