Chapter 19: Jesse's POV
Jesse's POV
I have been told I talk too much in the dark, so I'll say it now: I was terrified.
I sat in the armchair of my own cabin on the last Monday of November, the night before the planes.
I had a fiddle across my knees and a bow in my hand, and a woman was standing in the middle of my rug.
The cabin was one room, and I had made it nice.
A quilt, a wood stove, a lamp with a green shade, forty record sleeves stacked against the wall.
I had cleaned it twice.
Kit stood in front of me in her long coat with snow on her braid, and she was looking at me and at nobody else.
That was the terrifying part.
"Play," she said.
"What?" I said.
"I want you to play for me," she said. "Anything you want."
"I thought you were going to order me to take my clothes off."
"I will." She smiled. "After."
I put the bow on the strings, and my hand shook so hard that it scraped a screech out of the A string.
She did not laugh.
I tried again.
I played the first four bars of the slow tune I wrote in August, the one that did not have a name.
The bow skipped on every long note.
I stopped.
"I can't," I said. "I'm sorry. I can do it in front of forty people at a barn dance. I can do it drunk."
"But?" she said.
"I can't do it with you looking at me."
"Why not?" she said.
"Because I wrote it for you."
I hadn't meant to say that.
It fell out of my mouth and lay on the rug, and I wanted to crawl under the chair.
Kit crossed the floor.
She dropped her coat on the quilt and stood in front of me in her wool socks and a thin flannel nightgown.
Then she knelt between my knees.
"Then play it with your eyes shut," she said. "I'll look anyway."
"Kit."
"Play, Jesse."
I shut my eyes.
I put the bow back on the string, and I started the tune again.
I felt her hands on my belt.
I felt the buckle go, and the button, and the zipper, and the cool air on my skin when she freed me.
The bow stopped dead on a long note.
"Keep going," she said, low.
I kept going.
I played the second phrase with my heart slamming, and her hand closed around me, warm and sure.
Then her mouth was on me.
I made a sound, and the bow squealed across two strings.
