Chapter 23: The Books
On Wednesday morning I put the iron key in the office door and turned it.
The lock was stiff, and the door stuck, and I had to put my shoulder against it.
Inside, the room smelled of cold paper and cedar and old pipe smoke.
A roll-top desk stood under the window with a green-shaded lamp, and on the shelves above it stood forty years of ledgers in black cloth.
His father's handwriting ran along the spines.
I sat in the desk chair in my jeans and a red flannel and took down the newest ledger.
It was a book of numbers, and I liked numbers.
I had balanced my father's boat accounts at fourteen, and the columns made sense to my hands before they made sense to my head.
Hank came in behind me without knocking.
He stopped just inside the door with a mug in each hand.
"Coffee," he said.
"Put it down."
He set a mug on the blotter by my elbow.
He stood behind my chair, and I felt him there, tall and warm, reading over my shoulder.
