Chapter 19: Whose Son

Nobody moved for a long moment.

The truck outside stopped its beeping, and I heard a gull on the roof of the church.

Ambrose's uncle came out of the second pew, slowly, with his heavy hands open at his sides.

He stopped in the aisle between his nephew and the box.

"Ambrose," he said. "Look at your mother."

"Uncle, I can explain..."

"She's not looking at you."

I looked, and he was right.

Ambrose's mother had turned her back.

She stood facing the stained glass with the rosary wound tight around her knuckles, and her shoulders were rigid.

"I'll give you a choice," his uncle said, "and I'll give it in front of this parish, so no man can say after that I hid it."

His voice filled the church.

It was the voice of a man who had run his family for thirty years, and nobody coughed.

"You walk down these steps and across the street to the Quincy station. Within the hour, on your own feet, and you say to a detective what you said to your mother just now.

"Or the Tellers sign you over to Donal Dalton, and there's no one in this family you can ever call again."

Ambrose stared at him.

"You'd give me to a Dalton."
