My Groom Never Showed, So I Cursed Him for Eleven Months novel · Chapter 21 of 24

Chapter 21: Breakfast

Dahlia's POV

On Monday morning I took the kitchen sign down.

It was a square of cardboard on the pantry door, in my own handwriting, and it had hung there for eleven months.

KITCHEN CLOSED AFTER 9. STAFF DON'T SIT.

I held it a moment.

Then I took it to the stove, lit a corner, and watched it curl and go.

"That was a good rule," said Peg, from the table.

"It was a stupid rule."

"It was a good stupid rule. It kept you standing up long enough to hold on to something."

She buttered a slice of toast and did not look at me.

"I'd have starved you out of it by Christmas, if it hadn't worked."

I laughed and turned the flame off.

The men came at seven, because I had told Donal they could.

First the driver, who still did not speak but accepted a cup of coffee with a nod that meant everything.

Then the man with the grey moustache came, with two others, and then the rest, in twos and threes.

They wore their shirtsleeves and left their jackets in the hall.

The long kitchen table held twelve.

Peg had set it with the good blue plates from the dining-room cabinet.

She said she had been saving them for something worth the dishwater.
