Chapter 23: Ten O'Clock

At ten that night I was alone in the kitchen, scrubbing the last pot.

The house was dark except for the light over the stove.

Peg had gone up at nine with a hot-water bottle and a look that told me she knew exactly what she was doing.

I had taken off my apron and put my mother's tin on the shelf above the sink, where I could see it.

I heard his step in the hall.

I did not turn around.

"Kitchen's closed," I said. "It's after nine."

"I know," he said.

"Staff don't sit."

"You're not staff," he said.

"You don't eat standing up."

"I'll eat standing up for the rest of my life if you say so," he said. "I came to ask for something else."

I put down the pot.

I dried my hands on the towel and turned.

He stood in the doorway in his shirtsleeves, with his tie off and his collar open.

His face was perfectly calm, and I had learned by now what that meant.

In his left hand, down at his side, he held something small.

"I made a rule," I said, "the first night."

"The kitchen's closed after nine."

"I made it so I couldn't be in this room with you."

"I know that too." He crossed the tile, and stopped an arm's length away. "I've broken it every night since September. I'd like to break it for good."
