Chapter 24: Nobody Late
On the morning of my wedding, Peg did up the forty buttons and counted them out loud.
"Thirty-nine," she said, and stopped. "Forty. There. If you cry on this lace, I'll never forgive you."
"I'm not crying."
"You're thinking about it."
I was.
I stood in the bedroom in Hull in my mother's dress, in a window full of October light.
I looked at the ring on my hand.
It was nine in the morning, and the car was waiting.
Ambrose Teller had been sentenced in May, and I had not gone to hear it.
I had sat at the long kitchen table in Hull with a bowl of dough, and Donal had called me at noon to say it was done.
I hadn't cried that day either.
Peg tucked a curl behind my ear.
"Go on," she said. "He's been there since seven."
St. Colman's was full.
The organ was playing something slow and soft as I came up the steps, and the doors were open to the autumn light.
At the foot of the stairs my father stood by a folding table in his best brown suit.
A case of champagne sat at his feet.
He had been up since five, setting out glasses.
