Chapter 17: The Truck

Brice's POV

I parked across from the Wentworth Club at twelve-thirty, and I turned off the engine.

Brynn had asked me the night before, in my bed, with her head on the scar under my heart.

"I want to go in alone, Kincade."

"No."

"She'll say things in front of a guard that she won't say to me."

"She'll say things to you that I can't hear. That's the problem."

"I know." She'd lifted her chin and looked at me in the dark. "That's why I'm asking you."

Nobody had asked me to stay out of a room in nine years.

Walter would have said it was an order. Brynn said it like a request, which was worse, because I couldn't be angry at it.

So I said yes.

Now I sat with both hands on the wheel and watched the glass lobby across the street.

The club filled up with women in good coats.

At 12:41, a black town car pulled up to the curb, and Diane Wentworth got out of the back.

She wore a navy suit and her pearls, and she carried a leather folder.

She looked at the club doors.

Then she turned her head and looked straight at my truck.

She smiled, and she crossed the street.

I rolled down the window about four inches.

"Brice, honey." She bent a little, with one gloved hand on the roof. "I won't take long. I only want you to know what I'm going to say on Friday, so you can't say I didn't tell you."
