Chapter 20: The Owners
On Friday morning the Wentworth terrace was set with folding chairs, six hundred of them, in rows on the white carpet.
The arch was gone.
In its place stood a podium, and a long table where the seven directors sat with the lead director in the middle.
Staff in uniforms and staff in suits filled the chairs, along with the owners who held stock through the employee fund.
Housekeepers sat beside vice presidents.
I came through the same doors I had walked through a week before.
I wore my father's gray jacket, and Brice walked at my left shoulder and a little behind.
Nobody was smiling this time.
My mother was already seated in the front row with her hands folded and her pearls on.
She turned her head and nodded to me.
The lead director opened the meeting in a voice that wasn't quite steady.
"The owners are asked to vote on one question today," he said. "Whether Diane Wentworth shall be removed as family chair for cause. Mrs. Wentworth has asked to speak first."
My mother stood and went to the podium.
She did not use notes.
"Good morning," she said. "I know most of your names. I know the names of your children, and I have sent flowers to your mothers' funerals."
A low sound of affection moved through the rows, and it chilled me.
She spoke for six minutes.
She spoke about the scholarship, and the night shift, and the winter of the pipe burst when she had slept in a lobby chair.
She spoke about my father in a voice that made women wipe their eyes.
"I made a mistake," she said. "I chose badly for my daughter. I did it out of love, and I'll answer for it. But I won't be called a villain by a girl who has lost her judgment."
