Chapter 4: The Dinner

I walked into the private dining room at nine o'clock in my wedding dress.

Brice had a clean shirt in his trunk, and he'd offered it to me twice. I said no both times.

"Let them see it," I said.

"All right," he said. "Then I'm standing behind your chair."

Ten people sat at the long table under the Wentworth crest. The seven board members were there, and so was my mother at the head of it.

Preston sat halfway down on the left. He had changed into a charcoal suit, and he'd combed his hair.

Beside him sat a woman in gray with a leather folder open in front of her.

Everyone stopped talking when I came in.

The lead director stood up. "Brynn. Thank you for coming."

"You called," I said.

"Please, sit."

Brice pulled out the chair at the foot of the table, the one facing Preston, and stood behind it with his hands folded.

Preston looked at him and then looked away. It was a very small thing, and I saw it.

"I'd like to begin," said the woman in gray, "by saying that my client is heartbroken."

"Your client is a liar," I said.

"Brynn." The lead director raised a hand. "Let her finish."

"My client is heartbroken, and he is concerned. Miss Wentworth lost her father fourteen months ago. She has had no leave, no treatment, and now a public episode in front of five hundred guests."

"A recording of him," I said. "I played a recording."
