Chapter 23: Tack Room
I did not say anything.
I walked down the aisle between the stalls and took his wrist in both my hands.
He let me.
His knuckles were split to the white.
The post had a dent in it the size of a plum.
"Come here," I said.
"It's fine."
"It's not fine. It's a fracture or it isn't, and I'm the only person within ten miles who'll tell you which."
I led him to the tack room.
It was dim, and smelled of leather and neatsfoot oil.
The same trunk sat against the wall, the one where I had cried in a wedding dress.
I sat him down on it, switched on the lamp, and knelt in front of him on the floor.
I turned his hand over under the light.
Nothing was broken.
The skin was open across three knuckles, and the swelling was starting.
I took the first-aid kit from the shelf, because every tack room in Texas has one.
"Hold still."
"I'm not moving," he said.
"You're shaking."
"I'm angry."
"I know," I said.
I cleaned the cuts with saline, and he hissed through his teeth.
I put on antibiotic ointment and drew the edges of the worst one together with a butterfly strip.
My hands were careful.
His were big and warm in mine, and the veins stood out on the backs of them.
