Bryn's POV
Oma's dining room seated twelve, and she had filled nine of the chairs.
The long table was set with her mother's German china and a pot roast the size of a saddle.
At the head sat Oma herself, in her black cardigan and her pearls, with her cane hooked on the chair back.
On her right sat my mother, who had been brought in a car and did not know where to put her hands.
Beside her was the old man from the Cattlemen's hall, in a clean shirt.
Beside him sat the pastor, a man in a gray suit with a briefcase, and the ranch foreman, who would not look at anyone.
Jude and I took the seats on her left.
He had put on a clean shirt, and his hand covered mine under the cloth.
Across from us sat Alvin.
He had been given the chair at the far end, where the youngest child would sit.
He wore the navy suit from the church, and he had not shaved.
The campaign's pollster had called him four times since noon, and each time his phone had lit up beside his plate, and each time he'd turned it face down.
The polls had dropped six points since yesterday.
