Chapter 30: The Calf
The call came at ten to three in the morning, in the second week of December.
The phone rang on the nightstand, and I had it at my ear before I was awake.
"Roane Large Animal," I said.
"Bryn, it's the foreman. A heifer in the east barn. First calf, late. She's been down an hour and the calf's backwards."
"Don't touch her. I'm coming."
I swung my legs off the bed.
Jude was already sitting up, in the dark, pulling on his jeans.
"I'll drive," he said.
"You'll hold the light."
He didn't answer.
I looked over my shoulder.
He had gone absolutely still, with one boot in his hand.
"What?"
"Nothing," Jude said. "Let's go."
The east barn was brightly lit and cold.
Frost stood on the windows.
The foreman had two lamps up already, and a bucket of hot water, and the heifer lay in the last pen on her side with her flanks heaving.
I knelt in the straw.
I took off my coat, rolled my sleeve, and soaped my arm to the shoulder.
"Same as before," I said. "Backwards, one leg under."
"Same as before," Jude said behind me.
I went in.
I felt for the hocks, and the cord, and the angle, and talked low to the heifer the whole time.
