Chapter 22: Five Thousand

I let my bag slide off my shoulder onto the carpet.

"What did he say?"

"He asked me how much you paid me."

"He knows how much. Everybody knows how much."

"He wanted to hear me say it." Eli leaned against his door. "Then he said he'd double it. And then some."

"Double it for what?"

"Five thousand dollars," Eli said. "To walk away. Break up with you by the end of the summer. Tell you it was the job all along."

The hall was so quiet I could hear the vending machine down by the stairs.

"He said you were throwing away a real career for pictures," Eli said. "He said you only had the nerve because of me. And if I wasn't around, you'd come back to your senses."

I couldn't feel my hands.

"He said he'd have it in my account by Friday," Eli said. "He said I'd never have a tuition hold again."

"What did you say?"

He looked at me.

"I said no."

"Just no?"

"I said your daughter already paid me once, and I gave it back." He shrugged. "And I said I don't take jobs I can't do."

"What does that mean?"

"It means I can't stop liking you for five thousand dollars, Hana. I tried for five months for free."
