Chapter 11: The Muster
Marta opened the gate and walked out to him.
"Tell Ray no," she said. "Tell him your sister said no."
"I already said yes."
"Then unsay it."
"Marty, he gave me a job when I was sleeping in Mom's basement. Nobody else even called back." Shane looked past her at me. "Somebody has to fight for Ironworks. Better me than some guy who'd enjoy it."
"Who fights for the kids?" Marta said.
"I do," I said behind her.
Shane almost laughed.
"You're a porter with a bad leg."
"I've been one for a while," I said.
On Saturday the Convention Center was full of marks.
It was a big gray hall downtown that used to hold boat shows and comic book conventions.
Now there were about five thousand people in the bleachers and on the floor, and every one of them had a mark on his hand.
The Director stood on a stage at one end with his bullhorn, and Ray stood one step behind him.
A long line moved across the floor in front of the stage.
Each person held up a right hand, and a clerk called out the color, and another clerk wrote it in a ledger.
Most of them were gray, and once in a while one was orange.
Every time somebody called out a Bronze, the bleachers clapped.
Lou had brought Rosie and the five kids, and they sat in a row high up in the bleachers.
The boy with the notebook wrote down every color.
Rosie hadn't talked to me much all week.
Before I went down to the floor, she held out a folded paper without looking at me.
"It's for luck," she said. "It's free, because it's for luck. Not because I'm not mad."
