Chapter 15: The Long Way

Marta climbed off my lap and stood at the broken edge of the tower.

She watched the gray light pour out over the lake.

"You know what that is," she said.

"Yes."

"You said you'd tell me before it mattered." She didn't turn around. "I think it matters now."

So I told her.

I told her about the ramp and Ray's hand on my chest, and the twelve years before it.

I told her about the waffles on Tuesday and the woman in white.

I told her about the line in my head at the muster.

It took about ten minutes, and she didn't interrupt once.

When I finished, she sat back down on the beam beside me.

"Rosie," she said. "The Gold was Rosie."

"Yes."

"And she spent it on you."

"She spent it on me."

Marta put her hand flat on my side, on her own scar, and left it there.

"A week ago I'd have walked you to a doctor," she said. "Then I watched you take ten inches of me into your own body. So I believe you. I don't like it, but I believe you."

"Thank you."

"Did you know me? The first time?"
