Chapter 18: Niagara Square
The truck wanted me to come out to the gate, and I didn't.
I sat on the church steps beside the blanket over Lou until it drove away.
Then I went inside and woke up every porter in the rectory.
"Tomorrow at dawn the wall hands out rations on the City Hall steps," I said. "Everybody on the wall comes to the square for it. Hunters, families, clerks. The Director stands on the top step and watches them eat."
"And he sends the kids out the east gate after," the big porter said.
"In front of all of them, so they know what happens to a church that steals his porters."
The gray-bearded man rubbed his ankle.
"So what do we do? Sixty porters and three rifles against the wall?"
"We don't fight anybody," I said. "We go in at ration time, and we carry something."
"Carry what?"
I told them.
The big porter started laughing, and then the old man did, and then half the room.
The twins' father didn't laugh.
"Will it get my kids back?" he said.
"It'll get everybody's kids back," I said.
At dawn we walked in through the south gate, sixty-two porters, Marta, Shane and me.
