Chapter 19: Snow

I took Ray's hand off my chest, the way I'd done outside the church on the first night.

"It's not yours to take, Ray."

"Look around, buddy." He spread his arms at the square. "Who else is going to run it? You? You're a porter."

Down in the crowd, hunters were already calling him sir.

I left him on the step and went to get the kids.

We brought them home to Peckham Street that afternoon in the back of Lou's moving truck, with Shane driving.

It snowed the whole way.

It was the first snow of the year, the heavy wet kind that comes in sideways off the lake.

The twins rode on their father's lap and wouldn't let him put his arms anywhere but around them.

The boy with the notebook wrote down every street we passed.

The smallest girl fell asleep on Rosie in her pink raincoat.

The girl with the purple glasses sat next to me.

"Is Grandpa Lou at the church?" she said.

"He's at the church," I said.

We buried him in the rectory yard the next morning, under the one tree.

Porters dug the grave in the frozen ground in twenty minutes, taking turns, and nobody let me take a turn.
