Chapter 12: The Notebook

I carried his notebook around for two days without opening it.

It sat in my bag on Wednesday while I did the books for the HVAC company in Chandler.

It sat on my passenger seat on the drive home.

On Thursday I parked in row three before the sun was up.

The gym was dark in front of me, with a light on in the back.

I turned on the dome light.

I opened the cover.

The first page was dated in blue ballpoint, in small square capitals.

TUE JAN 6. 5:41 A.M. UNLOCKED. SHE WAS IN A GRAY MAZDA IN ROW THREE. SAT 11 MIN. WENT IN. BENCH 9.

I looked up through the windshield at the spot where I was parked.

I read it again.

I turned the page.

THU JAN 8. BENCH 9. SQUAT 9. DEADLIFT 9.

The next one said the same, and the one after, a column of dates and a column of nines.

He had written them every morning.

I went through them with my thumb, and my throat got tight.

SAT JAN 17. 9. SHE RACKED IT AND LOOKED AT THE CEILING.

TUE JAN 27. BENCH 9. SHE SAID A WORD UNDER HER BREATH. I DON'T KNOW WHAT.

Forty-one pages.

Every one of them ended the same way, with a nine at the bottom, underlined once.

Then I turned a page and the nine was a ten.

SAT FEB 7. 10.

He had circled it, twice, so hard the pen had gone through the paper.

Underneath, in smaller letters:

SHE SAID OKAY TO NOBODY.

I remembered it.
