Chapter 13: Ten

The owner's office had two chairs in front of the desk, and she did not tell us to sit in either one.

She shut the door behind us and went around to her side.

Her whistle lay on the blotter next to a stapler and a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST BOSS.

"Ms. Ruelas," she said. "I'd like to hear you say what that was."

"I ended the training agreement this morning," I said. "Before six. Before the closet."

"The order matters to my insurance carrier."

"Then write it in that order."

She looked at me over her reading glasses for a while.

Then she took a form out of a drawer, filled in the top, and turned it around.

TRAINING TERMINATION, MEMBER-INITIATED.

I signed it in the box at the bottom, with the date, and slid it back.

Rudy stood beside me with his hands clasped behind his back.

"Mr. Villalobos," the owner said. "Stop standing like that. You look like you're waiting on a firing squad."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Sit down."

He sat.

The owner stapled my form to a pink slip, the one he had been carrying around in his fist for two days, and dropped both in a folder.

"The written warning cites a trainer's relationship with a client," she said. "As of this morning there is no client. That part is closed."

Rudy's shoulders came down a little.

"Don't thank me," she said. "I have a question for you both, and I want a straight answer."

"Go ahead," I said.

"Three weeks," she said. "That's how long I sat on Mr. Villalobos's request for the six a.m. slot. A young man asks me for one particular woman's hour, on a Sunday, in writing. I figured he was either in love or about to be a problem."

"Which was it?" I said.

She tapped the folder.

"I still can't tell," she said. "The closet counts as evidence, but I don't know for which."

I did not look at Rudy.

I could feel him not looking at me.

"There are cameras in the hall," the owner said. "There are none in the closet, and I would like it to stay that way. I would also like my foam rollers back on the shelf."
