Chapter 15: Steam
Marisol's POV
I texted him on Wednesday night: Bring ice. A lot.
He wrote back one line, the first thing he had ever sent me that was not a number.
How much is a lot?
I wrote: Enough that you're scared of it.
On Thursday he was waiting at the steam room door at six-thirty with a blue cooler in both hands.
The steam room was behind the women's locker room, a tiled box with a glass door, a long white bench and a drain in the floor.
I had turned the generator on at six.
The glass was already so fogged that I could not see my own towel through it.
"Open the cooler," I said.
He lifted the lid.
It was full to the top with ice cubes from the gym's machine, the kind that come out in cloudy half-moons, with a layer of water sloshing on the bottom.
"Good," I said. "In."
We went in and shut the door.
The heat hit us as soon as the door shut.
I could see his outline, and the white tile, and nothing else.
The steam was so thick that I put out a hand and found his chest by touch.
"I can't see you," Rudy said.
"I know."
"Is that on purpose?"
"It is now," I said. "Towel off. Sit on the bench. Hands flat on the tile on either side of you."
I heard the towel drop.
I heard him sit, and the wet slap of his palms on the tile.
I let my own towel go.
The steam wrapped my skin, hot and soft, and sweat ran from my hairline into my eyes.
I set the cooler on the floor between his feet and knelt in front of him.
I put my hand in the ice.
The cold was so sharp that it hurt, and I took out a cube and held it up between two fingers.
"Don't flinch," I said.
