Chapter 6: Repossessed

"I'm okay, Bee," I said. "I'm just tired."

She put both coffees on the lobby bench and came straight into my arms.

She hugged me around the shoulders, carefully and a little high, which was how she hugged everyone these days.

"I saw the page you posted," she whispered. "Mara, is it real?"

"It's real."

"Mom wouldn't do that."

"She handed it to me in front of sixty people."

"She told me it was a formality." Brynn let go and looked at the case in Ansel's hand, and at the stranger holding it. "She said you'd sign, and everything would calm down."

"Did she tell you what it was for?"

"For the days you were out. She said it was an insurance thing."

"Ask her about the bank," I said.

"What bank?"

"Ask her what she owes it, and when. Then ask her why my name is on it."

Brynn's face went still, and I saw her decide not to believe me.

Then I saw her decide to ask anyway.

"I'll ask her," she said. "I promise."

She picked up the coffees, and her hand shook a little.

"This is Ansel Strandberg," I said. "From Strandberg Home."

"Hi," Brynn said. "Thank you for helping my sister."

"I haven't done anything yet," Ansel said.

"Then thank you in advance." She smiled, tired and bright, and went to the elevator. "Call me tonight, Mara. Please."

The doors closed on her.

Hattie watched the doors close and shook her head.
