Chapter 20: Nineteen Dollars on the Screen

"Thank you, Paloma," I said into the microphone. "I was hoping you would stand."

She stopped in the aisle with her hand still on her stomach.

"What?"

"You said you're carrying his child. You've told his family, his mother and now four hundred guests."

"Because it's true."

"Then let's look at it together."

I nodded to the technician.

The screen changed.

It showed a photograph of a woman at a corner table in a black dress, laughing, with a glass of red wine in her hand.

Under it was a line of white type: Perry Street, Tuesday, 9:41 p.m.

"That's you," I said. "Three glasses that night. The bartender will tell anyone who asks."

The ballroom murmured.

"That's private," Paloma said. "You had me followed."

"A customer in a bakery sent it to me."

The next slide came up.

It was the sonogram she had posted, the one with the caption about a miracle.

Beside it was a stock photo site, the same black and white image, and a price in the corner.

Nineteen dollars.

A woman at table five laughed out loud, then covered her mouth.

"You bought it," I said. "You bought the baby, Paloma. And then you brought a page with a forged number on it to my fiancé's apartment, hoping I'd cry."

"That's a lie," she said.

Her voice had gone high and thin.

"It's the clinic you named," said a clear carrying voice from the head table. "I phoned them this afternoon."
