Dale's POV
I parked in front of the house, under the streetlight, where anyone on Meadow Run Court could see the truck.
Jo had asked me to.
"No more back lots," she had said on the phone, at four that afternoon.
"If you're going to sit outside my house, sit there in the open."
I sat there in the open, with Biscuit's chin on my knee and the engine off.
It was a quarter to eight, and the sky over the rooftops had gone a dull November purple.
The kitchen light was on.
Through the window over the sink I could see the back of my brother's head.
He sat at the table with his shoulders square, a pen already in his hand.
Jo stood at the counter with her arms crossed, and she did not move at all.
The children were at her mother's on Sandusky Street, eating grilled cheese and watching a baking show.
That had been Jo's idea, and it was a good one.
Nothing about this should be anything they had to carry.
Across the street, the Hammonds' curtain moved.
It was Marty's curtain, and behind it a visor.
