Chapter 18: The Gavel

The Findlay High wrestling season opens in the second week of November, in a gym that smells of mat cleaner and popcorn.

Four hundred people sit in the bleachers, in school colors, with cushions and cowbells.

Before the first whistle, the booster club holds its annual meeting on the home side, with a folding table, a microphone and a gavel.

Todd had run it for six years.

He came in at six in a school quarter-zip, shaking hands up the aisle, and the parents shook back.

He had a good smile for every one of them, and I watched it work for the last time.

My daughter sat beside me with her notebook open on her knee.

"Is Dad in trouble?" she asked, quietly.

"Dad is running a meeting," I said. "You don't have to carry any of it. Eat your popcorn."

She ate her popcorn and wrote.

Down on the mat, my son stood in a warm-up jacket beside his coach, bouncing on his toes.

Dale had his hand on the back of my son's neck, and he was saying something short, and my son nodded at every word.

At six past six, my husband tapped the gavel.

"Folks," he said. "Thank you for coming out. Let's make this the best year for the Findlay Wrestling Boosters."
