Chapter 14: Dinner at Giulia's

I left Franklin standing in his own study with his phone still held out in front of him.

I ran.

Teo had the car running at the curb, with the back door already open.

"Giulia's," I said. "Shore Road. Drive."

"What's wrong?"

"Luca's eating her food."

Teo said a word I had never heard him say, and the car jumped forward.

Giulia's house was a limestone corner house with a lamp lit in every window.

"Don't."

I crossed the room and knocked the spoon out of his hand.

It hit the wall.

The bowl went with my other arm, across the table, and broke on the floor.

"Doctor!" one guard shouted behind me.

Luca stood up so fast his chair went over.

"What are you doing?"

"She has been poisoning you," I said. "Your sister, Luca. Every night, in a thermos with a note."

Nobody spoke.

Giulia put her napkin on the table.
