Chapter 5: The Lawyer Brings the Pills
Franklin arrived at ten the next morning, with Whitney beside him and a leather folder under his arm.
Luca had told him to come.
He had sent the message himself, in two lines, in the voice of a man asking for a signature.
I stood by the window of the study in a borrowed grey cardigan and watched my husband's car pull up.
"Last chance to leave," Luca said from his chair.
He was pale and slower than yesterday, but his hands were steady.
"No," I said. "I want him to see me here."
Teo opened the doors.
Franklin came in smiling, and then he saw me, and the smile did not drop but it stopped moving.
"Audrey."
"Franklin."
"Darling, thank God." He crossed the carpet with his arms already open. "We've been out of our minds. Whitney drove around until dawn looking for you."
Whitney stood behind him with red eyes and her hand at her mouth.
"We thought you'd done something to yourself," she said.
"I'm fine."
"You're not," Franklin said gently, and he said it loudly enough for the two guards by the door. "You haven't been well for a long time. Luca, forgive her. She's been sleepless and confused for months."
"Has she?" Luca said.
"She took my gun. She took a medicine bottle from the drawer. If anyone had been hurt..."
"No one was hurt."
"Thank God," Franklin said again, and took my hand.
I looked down at it.
It was the hand that had held the mail every morning for four years.
