Chapter 26: The Nursery
On the sixth day, Margaux stood at the nursery window with her daughter on her shoulder and watched the gate.
The baby had not yet got a name.
Margaux had a list of nine, and Julien's grandmother had vetoed seven.
The nurse's phone had been in a police evidence bag since the night of the birth.
The inspector had called that morning.
"Madame Villard, the messages are clear. The woman was paid in cash. The instructions came from a number registered to Madame Hortense Marceau."
"Did Thibault know?"
"There is nothing in writing from your husband."
"He is not my husband."
"I beg your pardon. From Monsieur Marceau."
"Thank you, Inspector."
"We will be at the house at eleven, if you will allow it. She has asked to see the child."
Margaux had gone very still.
"She has asked?"
"Through her lawyer. She says she is entitled."
"Then let her come," Margaux said. "Let her come to my gate."
At ten to eleven, a black car came up the avenue.
It stopped in front of the wrought iron.
Hortense stepped out in a grey coat, with her silver hair set and her pearls on.
A lawyer climbed out behind her, and behind him two other cars disgorged men with cameras.
Margaux went out onto the front step with the baby in her arms.
Julien came after her and stood one step lower.
"Margaux," Hortense called across the gravel, loud enough for the street. "Three generations of Marceaus have been born in this city. You have kept my son's child in a stranger's house for six days."
"I have kept my daughter in my house for six days."
"The child is a Marceau!"
"The child is six days old," Margaux said. "And the night she was born, your nurse tried to put her in a service lift."
