Chapter 30: The House
Julien Aubrac rehearsed it in the shower, in the car and twice in front of his own mirror.
He had no ring.
He had walked past four jewellers in a week and gone into none.
A ring was something you gave a woman as proof, and Margaux had spent five years being given proof.
So on Sunday evening he stood in the garden room with his hands in his pockets, and waited for her to come down.
She came in with the baby on her shoulder, in the green dress she had worn on the day of the first treatment.
"Lise is taking her in an hour," she said. "Why are you standing in the middle of the room?"
"I have a question."
"You have had a question since Friday. You keep opening your mouth at breakfast."
"Yes."
"And closing it again."
"Margaux."
"Julien. I have a feeding in forty minutes and a lab review in the morning. Ask."
His heart pounded.
He had faced down a hostile takeover without a tremor, and now his hands were damp.
"I'm thirty-four," he said. "I have a house too big for me and a grandmother who thinks she runs it. I have been in love with you since a pavement outside a hospital, when I had not decided yet that it was love."
"Julien."
"There is no cure left between us. There is no debt. There is not a single paper you could hold me to." He took one hand out of his pocket, and it was empty. "I would like you to marry me. In whatever way you will. Or not at all, if you would rather. I will be here either way."
