Chapter 15: Nick's Three A.M.

Nick's POV

I had looked at her exactly once since she sat down, and it was costing me.

Leigh sat at the far end of my table under a brass nameplate with her hands folded, and she was the calmest person in the room.

That was how I knew she was frightened.

She had told me, in the dark at the hotel, that her hands went quiet when she was most afraid.

I read the bank confirmation again.

Four million dollars. 2:14 p.m. Thursday. Account holder, Leigh Stannard.

"Mr. Garland," Brent's lawyer said, in a smooth, sorry voice. "I'm afraid my client has just shown you evidence of theft from the company you are about to buy. I'd advise you to suspend the closing."

"I'd like that in writing," I said.

"Of course."

"I'd also like to know why Pruden Cold Chain's controller didn't tell me about a four-million-dollar wire yesterday."

"He didn't know. It was entered from my client's own login."

"So your client sent four million dollars to Leigh Stannard," I said, "and now he'd like us to arrest her for taking it."

Brent folded his hands on the portfolio.

"I'd like the truth to come out," he said.

Behind him, the door opened.

Two uniformed police officers came in, a man and a woman, with a security guard from my lobby holding the door.

"Ms. Leigh Stannard?" the woman said.

Leigh stood up.

"I'm Leigh Stannard."

"We have a complaint from Mr. Pruden's attorney. Embezzlement, and unlawful transfer of corporate funds. We need you to come with us."

Her father took one step off the wall.

I put up a hand, and he stopped.

I did not take my eyes off Brent. He wore the expression of a man at a funeral for someone he had never liked.
