Chapter 13: What Each Owes
At eleven that night I put on my coat.
"Where are you going?" Roz asked.
"Rule four," I said. "Nobody sleeps alone unless they ask. I'm asking."
Declan opened his mouth. I shook my head, and he closed it.
"I'll be at the inn with Imogen. I'll be back in the morning."
"Jules," said Roz.
"I'm not leaving. I'm sleeping somewhere that isn't full of you."
I drove the lane with the wipers going. The reporters had gone home for the night.
Imogen opened the door of her room at the Harlow inn in a plaid robe, holding a glass of whiskey.
She looked at my face and stepped back.
"Sit," she said. "You can have the sofa. I've had worse houseguests."
She poured me two fingers and sat on the bed with her feet tucked under her.
I told her everything, from the key to the lawyer's envelope. It took an hour. She did not interrupt once, which for Imogen was a kind of miracle.
When I finished, she turned her glass in her hand.
"Well," she said. "That's the best plot you've ever handed me, and I hate that it's yours."
"Imogen."
"I'm sorry. Occupational reflex." She put the glass down. "I've been married twice, you know."
"I know."
"The first one took up the cello at fifty and left me for the cello teacher. I was furious for a year."
"And the second?"
"The second never left. I had to ask him to." She smiled at the ceiling. "I'm telling you that nobody gets out of love clean. You just pick which mess you'd rather live in."
"That's not advice."
"No. This is advice." She sat forward. "Don't forgive anybody in the dark, and don't punish anybody in the dark either. Tell them what they owe you in daylight, out loud, and then make them pay it where you can watch."
