Chapter 8: Say My Name

"Tell me about the drawer," I said.

Roz's hands were still in my hair. The water had gone lukewarm.

"Not here," she said. "Not in a bathtub, with you naked and me on my knees. I want to tell it right."

"You're afraid."

"Yes."

"Of what?"

"That when I'm done, you'll never let me touch you again."

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I stood up.

Water ran off me in sheets. Roz's eyes went down my body and came up again, and she didn't try to hide it.

"Towel," I said.

She handed it over. I wrapped it around me and stepped out onto the cold tile.

"Bedroom," I said. "Now. The guest room, not mine."

"Jules..."

"The tub question can wait. The rest of it can't."

Declan was sitting on the landing, as he had been all evening, with a coffee going cold in his hands.

He stood when he saw us.

"Sit," I said. "Stay out here. Don't come in, and don't knock."

"What's happening?"

"Roz and I are going to do something. You can listen. You can't see."

Pain crossed his face, then hunger, then gratitude.

"Okay," he said, and sat back down.

I shut the guest room door behind us.

Roz stood in the middle of the room. Her sweatshirt was damp where she'd leaned over the tub.

"Take it off," I said.

She pulled it over her head. She had nothing on under it.

Her skin was pale and freckled all the way down, and her breasts rose and fell fast.
