Chapter 18: The Second Signature
I told Clark I would sign.
I did it by text, at noon: *Fine. Thursday. Howard's conference room.*
Bree answered for him within minutes.
*Thank you, Mer. This is the right thing. xo*
Howard did not like it.
"You are asking me to let a woman I put on leave walk into my firm," he said.
"I'm asking you to let her walk into a glass room. With a camera in the ceiling, and you and two partners in the hall."
He took off his half-glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"If she comes in with a lawyer, it's off."
"She won't. She thinks she's won."
On Thursday at ten the conference room smelled of coffee and carpet cleaner.
I sat on the long side of the table with a pen and my father's watch.
Across from me sat Clark, in the suit he had worn to the gala, thinner than a week ago.
He would not meet my eyes.
Bree arrived last, in cream, with a leather folder, a notary behind her, and a smile of enormous kindness.
"Meredith," she said. "I'm so glad."
"Sit down, Bree."
She sat.
The notary, a small woman with a canvas bag, took the end of the table and unpacked a stamp and a journal.
Bree opened the folder.
"It's simple," she said, in her warmest voice. "An agreement to convey the Cobble Hill house to Clark, effective the day the court lifts the freeze. A letter withdrawing you from the vote. And a short note naming Clark for your seat."
"The note names Clark."
"Howard will be thrilled. It keeps the seat in the family."
