Chapter 19: The Night Before

Anthony's POV

She came to my door at eleven with her shoes in her hand.

"Clark texted me," Meredith said. "He wrote: I signed so I could swear I watched you refuse. I'm going to say it under oath."

"Good."

"He wants nothing for it."

"Good," I said again, and stepped aside to let her in.

The vote was set for Monday.

I had thought tonight would be about the vote.

She walked to my kitchen counter and set down her bag, and she put her hand flat on a manila folder I had left there.

I had left it on purpose.

I had told myself it was an accident for three days.

"What's this?"

"Read it."

She opened it.

It was a motion, twelve pages, on my own letterhead.

*Petition for Review of Partnership Candidacy, Calder & Finch.* It cited her signature on the Whitlow judgment as grounds for her removal.

I had written it in the cab home from the gala.

I had not filed it, and I had not thrown it away.

Meredith read the whole thing standing up.

I watched her face, and for once it gave me nothing.

"You wrote this before the terrace," she said.

"After. In the cab. I was angry."

"It's good."

"It is very good."

"It would have worked."

"Yes."

She closed the folder.

"Why are you showing me?"

"Because you told me no lies, and you were right to. I have been giving you the Anthony who sits at your grandmother's table." My voice was rougher than I wanted. "I want you to see the other one before tomorrow. Before you decide you are safe with me."

She said nothing.

I pulled up my left sleeve to the elbow.

"The kitchen window," I said. "In Larchmont."
