Chapter 21: The Lobby
I took the elevator, and every partner in the room took it with me.
We came out into the lobby as Bree burst through the stairwell door.
She had lost a shoe.
Her hair had come down, and her face was wet and wild, and she stumbled forward before she saw them.
Two investigators from the district attorney's office stood by the revolving door in plain coats.
Behind them waited two uniformed officers.
"Sabrina Rowan?" one of the investigators said.
Bree stopped on the marble.
She looked left, at the front desk.
She looked right, at the street.
She looked back at the elevator, where thirty people from her own firm were standing in a ring.
For nine years she had worked that lobby.
She had known every doorman's children by name.
"There's been a mistake," she said.
"Ma'am, you're under arrest for grand larceny in the second degree, forgery in the second degree, and criminal possession of a forged instrument."
"I'm the victim here."
"Turn around, please."
"Howard!" She spun toward him. "Howard, tell them. I've been here nine years. I've been loyal to this firm. She is lying to you. She's always been jealous of me."
Howard looked at her and said nothing.
He had never been a cruel man.
It was terrible to watch him decide not to be kind.
An officer took her arm.
Bree twisted away and threw herself across the lobby.
"Clark!"
He had come down behind me, alone, and he stood against the elevator wall with his hands hanging.
