Chapter 4: Opposing Counsel

Howard gave us the small conference room on thirty-one, the one with no windows.

He stood in the doorway for a moment.

"Door stays open," he told Anthony Crane. "Fifteen minutes."

"Ten will do."

Howard left.

Anthony Crane closed the door anyway and sat down across from me.

He put a folder on the table and did not open it.

"Ms. Lang. I represent Clark Kovach in the divorce he filed against you last Friday."

"I know. I read your signature."

"Then you know what he wants."

"The townhouse. Half my income. Half my equity, if I make partner." I leaned back. "He filed six days before I knew there was a marriage to end. Did you ask him why?"

"I asked."

"What did he say?"

"That he'd been unhappy for some time." His voice had no color in it. "I took the retainer. Whether I believe him is not in the engagement letter."

He had a flat, quiet way of talking, and he never repeated himself.

I had cross-examined men who shouted. This one made me lean in.

"The house is mine," I said. "The deed has one name on it."

"Mr. Kovach has paid toward the mortgage for four years. He will say the house became marital property the first month he paid."

"He paid a third of it."

"Then he will ask for a third of the house, and for the rest in damages." He slid one page across the table. "The partnership is the larger claim. He says you built your practice on the marriage."

"On his coat-carrying?"

"I don't know what that means."
