Chapter 6: The Freeze

I stood up in a Brooklyn courtroom at nine-thirty the next morning with a motion I had finished at four.

The judge was a gray-haired woman with no patience in her face.

At the other table sat Anthony Crane, and beside him Clark, in the blue suit I had bought him for our fourth anniversary.

He did not look at me.

Bree sat in the last row of the gallery, in a navy dress, hands folded.

She had come to watch.

"Counsel," the judge said. "You have the floor. Be brief."

"Your Honor, I ask for an order freezing the joint account and barring any transfer or sale of the townhouse until the divorce is decided."

"On what grounds?"

"Waste. Over eight months, two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars left that account in nine transfers. All went to the same place."

I handed the clerk a bound set of statements.

Anthony rose before I sat.

"Your Honor, Mr. Kovach concedes he moved funds. A husband is entitled to manage his marital accounts. The petitioner has found a pattern and called it a crime."

His voice was calm, and he did not rush.

I had cross-examined men in this room for ten years, and none of them had made it sound like this: reasonable, almost kind.

He was good.

"Mr. Kovach will explain the transfers if required," he said. "He had a business reason."

"I'd like to hear it," the judge said. "Mr. Kovach. Stand."

Clark stood.

"Where did the money go?"

"To an investment account," Clark said. "For our future."

"Whose investment account?"

"It's a consulting vehicle. Mine."
