Chapter 7: Howard's Office

Howard Finch kept bad coffee in a pot on the credenza and refused to throw it out.

He poured me a cup at four o'clock that afternoon and set it where I could not reach it.

"Drink it later," he said. "I want your hands free."

His office was on forty, with a view of the river and a rug older than I was.

"I want to say two things," Howard said. "First, you did right in that room. Nobody else had the nerve to make a speech before a threat."

"And second?"

"I'm sorry. I should have seen it was her."

"She made the calendar. She made all of our calendars."

"She made mine for six years."

He sat heavily and said, without looking at me, "She asked me last month whether Clark might make partner one day."

"What did you tell her?"

"That I'd think about it." He winced. "I wasn't thinking about it. I was being polite."

He rubbed his eyes under the glasses.

"The partners are frightened, Meredith. Nine of them don't know what to do about a firm where a video can arrive in their pocket. I told them all it was a private wrong, and nobody here is to ask you."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. I've read your husband's petition."

"I have it here."

I took it out of my bag.

I had read it twice in the elevator, and I had missed something.

I turned to page six, paragraph fourteen, and slid the paper across his desk.

"Read the second line," I said.

Howard put his half-glasses on.
