Chapter 11: The Casserole

I went to the door myself.

Beth tried to stop me with one hand on my shoulder, and I shook my head at her.

She took her phone out of her back pocket, pressed the red button and held it against her chest, pointed out.

Then she opened the door.

"Elora." Janelle's face crumpled in sympathy. "Oh, honey. You shouldn't be on your feet."

She held out the foil dish.

"Chicken and rice. You need iron after what they took out of you."

I did not take it.

Beth did, and set it on the porch rail, away from both of us.

"This is my lawyer," Janelle said, and turned a hand toward the woman in the gray suit. "I wanted her here because I know how it looks, and I don't want any more confusion."

"Mrs. Erickson." The lawyer's voice was smooth and low. "I'll be brief. Ms. Pratt would like to cover every cost of your daughter's care. The NICU, the surgery, the follow-up. It would come to a great deal of money."

I looked at Janelle.

She looked back, gentle and sad.

"All we ask," the lawyer said, "is a short statement that you can't identify the voices you heard, and that you won't contact the Pratt family again. It protects everyone. You get the bills paid, and Dr. Erickson gets his career."

I took the marker out of my cardigan pocket.

I wrote on the whiteboard I had carried all the way from the hospital.

IT WAS HER VOICE.

Janelle read it, and sighed.

"Elora. I know you believe that. I do. You were hurt and frightened, and people say things in that state." She stepped closer. "But think about what happens if this goes to court."
