Chapter 19: What Darryl Said
The visiting room at the county jail had one table, two chairs and a camera in the corner.
Beth had driven me there, and Ansel waited in the parking lot with the engine off.
Terms were terms.
I sat down across from a man I had last seen through a rag.
Darryl Pratt had no gloves on today.
His hands lay on the table in cuffs, and they were big and pale and shaking.
His head was shaved the same, and his gray jacket had been traded for orange.
His lawyer sat beside him, a young man in a bad suit.
The agent stood behind the glass with her arms folded.
"Mrs. Erickson," the lawyer said. "My client wants to say a few things. Nothing he says today can be used for a deal. He's already made his."
"I don't want a deal," Darryl said. "I want to say it."
His voice was the same flat voice that had told me, in a storage unit, to be quiet.
I put my hands on the table.
"Look at me," I said.
He looked.
His eyes were a washed blue, and they slid away and came back.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I know that's nothing."
"It's nothing," I agreed. "Go on."
He swallowed.
"It started in March," he said. "She came to my place on a Sunday with a bottle of wine. She'd heard you were pregnant. She said, he's never going to leave her now."
"Who is she?"
"My sister. Janelle."
He said her name and stopped for a moment.
"She said she didn't want you dead. She said that over and over. She wanted you to hear him pick her. She wanted you to walk out on your own."
