Chapter 4: The Second Bar

His fingers stayed on my belly.

"Janelle," Ansel said. "Take the towel off her face."

"Doctor, the field is sterile, and she's agitated," Janelle said. "Let's get the baby out."

"Take it off."

She did not move.

So my husband stepped away from the table, came around to the head of it and lifted the towel with his own gloved hand.

In eleven years of surgery, he had never looked at a patient's face before cutting.

He looked at mine.

It was swollen shut on one side, purple and strange, with blood drying at my lip.

My eyes were the only part left that was mine.

"Lora," he said.

It was the name only he uses, in the dark, when he thinks I'm asleep.

I cried then. Tears ran into my ears.

"That's my wife," Ansel said, to the whole room. His voice cracked on the last word. "This is Elora Erickson. Everybody heard that."

Nobody spoke. The song ended and the next one began.

"Ansel." Janelle stepped in close, calm and warm. "You've had the worst night of your life reading about a scam, and you're seeing it everywhere. The chart says Jane Doe."

"She knows my name by tapping on the rail."

"Then listen to me. You can't operate on her. It's a conflict, and your hands will shake. Hand it off."

"Who?"

"The backup surgeon is behind a jackknifed truck on the highway. Forty minutes out in this storm. I called him myself."

I looked up at her over the edge of the towel.

She did not look at me.
