Chapter 20: The Pistol
"They'll open it at eight," Soren said. "Whatever's in it, it's on camera."
"Then I want to know first."
"Annika, you can't touch that house."
"I don't need to touch it."
I got out of bed and found the old laptop Rosalyn had lent me.
It took four tries to get into my own email.
At the bottom of the inbox sat a string of automatic messages with a little blue camera icon.
Carter had put a camera in the upstairs hall two years ago, after a break-in on our street.
He'd attached it to my address, because, he said, I was the one who checked things.
He had never taken it off.
The last alert was from nine-forty the night before.
I pressed play with Soren leaning over my shoulder.
The clip was grainy and silent.
It showed the hall outside the spare room, and the hall light came on by itself.
A figure in a dark coat stepped into the frame carrying a cloth bag.
She wore black leather gloves.
She walked into the spare room and came out nine minutes later with the empty bag hanging from her hand.
